Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program provides scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) from different countries to spend up to one academic year in the USA. The program is vital to building bridges of understanding and expanding communication between people of the United States and partner countries in the greater interest of promoting mutual respect. K-L YES was established in October 2002 and launched in April 2003 as Youth Exchange and Study (YES) supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. The program was officially launched in Bangladesh in 2004. To date, 155 students from Bangladesh successfully participated in and completed the YES program.

 

How to Apply...

Students meeting the following criteria can apply for preliminary application:

  • Citizen or Permanent Resident of Bangladesh. The student, including immediate family member must not have applied at any time for permission to emigrate to the U.S. or for a Green Card.
  • Minimum 15 years of age but not more than 17 years.
  • Students currently enrolled in 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grades; or equivalent grades but not students enrolled in the 12th or equivalent grade.
  • Be enrolled in a secondary school at the time of application.
  • Minimum grade of ‘B’ in all subjects average without any failing grades. Provide a current academic year transcript and verified true copies of the transcripts for the last two academic years.
  • Excellent English language ability.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Bangladeshi culture and values, and be able to accurately present Bangladeshi culture in American schools and communities.

Application and Selection Process o Interested students are encouraged to apply through their educational Institutions according to K-L YES recruitment information packets sent from iEARN-BD office.

  • Participating institutions/organizations have to collect the Preliminary Application forms for students and submit all completed applications with all required documents to the iEARN-BD office.
  • Eligible students whose institutions are not interested in participating in the program may apply independently. They can collect the Preliminary Application Form from the iEARN-BD office or download from www.yes.iearnbd.org . The form is to be printed, filled in and submitted at the iEARN-BD office by post or by hand.
  • After the initial screening, short listed candidates will sit for the Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) Test. Students who qualify must submit the complete K-L YES application form along with the signed program agreement and passport.
  • Only qualified students in the SLEP test will be interviewed and their applications will be reviewed and evaluated by an Interview Committee.
  • Following the interviews, list of finalists and alternates will be announced from Washington DC, USA and finally selected students will be notified by YES program office.
  • Students selected as K-L YES scholars will attend Pre Departure Orientation (PDO) program prior to traveling to the USA.
