The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program was established in October, 2002 to provide scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) to spend up to one academic year in the U.S. The program is vital to expanding communication between the people of the United States and its partner countries in the program in order to promote mutual understanding and respect.
YES launched in Mali in 2007 in partnership with the US Embassy, iEARN-Mali, Ministry of Education, and a local not-for-profit organization SchoolNetMali - Mokoya Juru. Since 2007, over 35 students in Mali received the YES scholarships, lived with a host family, attended a U.S. high school, engaged in activities to learn about American society and values, acquired leadership skills, and helped educate Americans about their countries and cultures. YES Mali collaborates with the Ministry of Education to recruit in 4,000 schools around the country.
