A Day in the Life of a DCO Leader

Ashrum

By Arhum Ishtiaq (YES 2013-2014, Pakistan, hosted by PAX in Orange, MA)

Being a DCO alumni instructor was an indescribable experience. I would describe the journey as a behind the scenes look at what DCOs are like at the National 4H Conference Center. I could have never imagined myself being there as a staff member! It was difficult to comprehend the fact that I was teaching and mentoring students that were sitting exactly where I was, only four years ago.

I wanted to be an instructor so I could witness the growth of the 2017-2018 YES participants as they gain new insight, discover themselves, and become well-equipped to have the best exchange year possible. As an instructor, I strived to fulfill my responsibility as an alumni mentor and foster the students’ creativity, develop their character, and provide them with a worldly perspective. I strongly believe that a worldly perspective will enable students to reach their full potential and live a productive life, not just during their exchange year but for the rest of their lives.

I could not recall one dull or uneventful day throughout the DCO. I saw enthusiastic young people ready to embark on their exchanges. I met many professionals who are pioneers in their careers and had the opportunity to learn from them. I explored D.C. more than ever before. From getting to know the other awesome YES alumni instructors to working with the enthusiastic American Councils staff to teaching and mentoring nearly 500 young ambassadors from all over the world, this experience truly helped me learn, grow and improve as a person, teacher and friend.

Furthermore, the DCO allowed me to renew my faith in the youth. Seeing all of the excited, enthusiastic and cheerful faces ready to go out and share their culture filled me with joy and gratitude. I was honored that I could witness it all unfold and be involved in their education and development as YES scholars.

I love searching for opportunities where I can use my intellect, creativity and experiences to help students become aware, prepared and excited for the adventure that awaits them on their exchange year. I am truly humbled and thankful that I was given the opportunity to be a DCO instructor. To all the YES scholars that attended this DCO, I hope you're having the time of your life and experiencing all that the year has to offer!
