Alumni Teach Entrepreneurial Skills to Girl Scouts

Albania Selling Lemonade At The Youth Center In Shkoder As Part Of Jona Fani Yes15 Final Implementation Project Of Her Start Qube Grant

Following the StartQube Social Entrepreneurship Workshop for A-SMYLE/FLEX and YES Alumni held in Macedonia in October 2016, Erta Prifti (YES ’15, hosted by Ayusa in North Branch, MN) and Jona Fani (YES ’15, hosted by PAX in De Pere, WI) each organized a program to teach entrepreneurial and fundraising skills to Girl Scouts in their communities in Albania, with support from post-workshop small grant funds.

On March 26 in Fier, Erta Prifti (YES ’15), 12 Girl Scouts, their troop leader, and a Peace Corps Volunteer planted flowers, painted benches, and created a mural featuring Mother Teresa’s famous quote, “Peace begins with a smile” in the yard of a local home for the elderly. The materials used were purchased with money the Girl Scouts had raised the month before through a cookie sale fundraiser they designed and implemented with training and guidance from Erta. The group also wrote thank-you cards to people and institutions that had contributed to their cause, including the Municipality of Fier, the local English Corner, and local businesses.

On March 31 in Shkoder, Jona and 13 Girl Scouts from the School Age Orphanage in Shkoder used the knowledge and skills they had gained through Jona’s four-month training program to organize a fundraising fair where they sold handmade cards, vases, bracelets, and lemonade. The event attracted approximately 50 visitors, and enough money was raised to purchase official girl scout scarves for each of the participants. "The Girl Scout sold everything within an hour," explained Jona, "but the most fun they had was meeting the people who visited. They were surprised by how much interest everyone showed in their little project. By the end of the fair, not only did they earn the needed amount of money, but they learned how fun it is to be an active part of the community."
