Autism Awareness Month

four photos showing alumni doing art projects

In one remarkable activity, YES alumni from the West Bank joined forces with YES alumni from Israel (Arab Communities) for the first time in many years, in order to celebrate April Autism Awareness Month in Jerusalem!

A total of twenty-two alumni visited Basma School for Autistic Children in Jerusalem. The school counselor met with the alumni before the activity to educate them about autism and how to work with autistic children during the activity. The alumni held different indoor and outdoor activities, including tree planting in the school backyard, painting old tires to reuse as playground benches, painting faces, creating a mural, and finally, playing games and dancing with the children.

Mr. Rami Badarna, the school principal, was very pleased with the alumni's efforts. He said, “we’ve hosted in our school so many different groups of volunteers, but I must confess that you have shown great organization and communication skills during this activity. I admire how you dealt with the children and the sensitivity you have shown towards their needs." The alumni were excited to collaborate on this event!
