During the 2016-2017 school year, my family and I hosted an exchange student. We first heard about this program through a local coordinator at my mom's work and after some thought, decided to host a student. At first I wondered why the YES program is called an exchange program. Now, I think I understand. My name is Dara and I created a bond this past year that will last a lifetime. The exchange student we hosted is named Mirela and she is from Bulgaria. This year, Mirela learned about the U.S. but taught me even more about her home country. This is where the word, "exchange" comes into action. We exchanged knowledge and experiences. She made us traditional Bulgarian food, taught me traditional dances, and even taught me some Bulgarian. Mirela also inspired me to become an exchange student. It is an amazing way to learn about other cultures. My advice to others who are thinking of hosting an exchange student is to go for it. It may seem difficult to host an exchange student, however it's worth it. It has really given me and my family a different perspective on life from everyday activities to world views. From this, I have not only gained relations across the ocean, but have also gained a lifelong sister. With Mirela leaving soon, I know that I will miss her. I know that this will not be goodbye, but a see you later. We will also visit her in Bulgaria. As the Beatles once said, "I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello."
