By Lamija Jamak, YES 2013-2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted by PAX in Marysville, WA

In June, Pavle Lakic (YES 2011-2012, Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted by YFU in Roseville, MN) and Amela Nevaljalovic (YES 2016-2017, Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted by CIEE in Sterling, CO) organized projects that were inspired by the 2018 IDEAL Workshop and supported by the workshop’s small grants program. The 2018 IDEAL Workshop, a program for Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) and YES alumni that was held in Kosovo from February 28 to March 4, 2018, was organized by American Councils for International Education with support from the FLEX and YES programs and the U.S. Embassies in Prishtina, Skopje, and Sofia.

On June 6, Pavle, who participated in the workshop’s Utilizing Sports as a Tool for Social Change theme group, organized the educational workshop Do Not Wait, Sit Straight. This workshop was designed to educate 35 students of Medical University Tuzla and other community members about how certain negative habits, such as improper posture and lack of physical activity, lead to serious problems with the locomotor (musculoskeletal) system. The event featured special guest Elvir Bijedic, an osteopath and sports physiotherapist, who shared advice based on his experiences working with the patients. Pavle, who is studying to become physiotherapist, organized this workshop as an opportunity for him and his fellow medical school students to learn more about this important area of health. Pavle plans to organize a second workshop on a health-related topic in July.

Bosnia And Herzegovina Students Of Safvet Beg Basagic Elementary School In Breza Created An Art Wall Decorated With Their Drawings From The Project Arts For Everyone Organized By Yes Alumna Amela Nevaljalovic

On June 12, Amela, who participated in the workshop’s Utilizing the Arts as a Tool for Social Change theme group, organized a project called Arts for Everyone. The project began with an art activity for fifth grade students at her former elementary school, Safvet Beg Basagic Elementary school in Breza. Around 40 students participated in the event, where they had the opportunity to express their perspectives on the question "What is art for me?" through drawing and coloring. The following day, students created an art wall decorated with their drawings in the hallway of their school. Amela, who loves art, learned at the IDEAL Workshop that through art, each of us can express ourselves in many different ways. She was eager to engage students of her elementary school and show them how everyone can be an artist and enjoy extracurricular activities like this one.
