International Movie Night at the American University in Bulgaria

Bulgaria Blagoevgrad During International Movie Night Participants Enjoying The Cultural Experience

By Nazmie Mustafa (YES 2015-2016, Bulgaria, hosted by YFU in Whitehall, MI).

On November 16, in celebration of International Education Week, Victoria Angelova (YES ’17) and I organized an event called International Movie Night at the American University in Bulgaria. More than 20 students gathered to watch Jerico by Seckeita Lewis. Jerico is a dramatic comedy about two friends living in rural Mississippi who embark on a journey to fulfill their dreams when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is enacted. Afterwards, participants had the opportunity to discuss thematic elements of the film such as race and the role of a female director and crowdfunding in producing the movie. Participants were eager to find out more about other cultures. Everyone in the audience, which included students from Bulgaria, Colombia, Kazakhstan, and Albania, had an amazing time while learning something new. One of the main messages of the movie was the importance of people from all backgrounds coming together, and the event was a beautiful representation of this!
