Libyan YES Alumni at Robotics Competition

Libya Robotics 1

By Jehad Oumer, YES 2016-17, Libya, hosted by AFS in Washington, D.C.

Throughout my exchange year in D.C., I was involved in a tech group back in my country (Libya) called Tech Impact. After I finished my exchange year and returned back to Tripoli, I fully joined the team and helped finishing up the robot to represent Libya in a global competition that would be held from June 14th to the 20th in Washington, D.C. - my former host city!  Although my country is facing struggles and conflicts, we managed to face the challenges and participate in the competition.

This international robotics event included 163 international teams competing to accomplish a task in the theme "H2O Flow". The main idea was to separate clean water from impurities to provide more water access to people whom have no or limited access to water

While we prepared for the competition, we had the chance to meet with the U.S. Ambassador to Libya at the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia. After, me and my colleague Anis Eljorni (YES 2016 - 2017, Libya, hosted by CIEE in Des Moines, IA) arrived D.C. to represent Team Libya in the competition. During the week-long competition, we had the chance to be a part of a huge community full of brilliant people and ideas.
