After over a year of delay, the YES students from Libya are jumping in to their exchange experiences in the United States with great enthusiasm. Two students in particular have been making the most of their time by teaming up for activities in the nation’s capital.

Jehad Oumer and Suleiman Latrsh are both YES 2016-2017 students from Libya who were placed by AFS in Washington, DC. They have been keeping each other busy outside of school by visiting the White House and the Renwick Gallery, among other notable hot spots.

They embraced the YES spirit of volunteerism and cultural exchange immediately by organizing a visit for exchange students to the Islamic Center of Washington DC on the Eid al-Adha holiday. Says Jehad, “We found it the best way to share our culture and beliefs with other people – that is the goal of the program.”

It sounds like it was a big success! Jehad explains, “At first we didn’t expect many people to come, but on the day of the event, I was shocked! There were about 20 people – exchange students, AFS volunteers, host parents, and even friends from school.”

The pair has not slowed down since then. YES program staff even spotted them volunteering at the Turkish Festival in DC this past weekend!

It looks like it will be a packed year for these eager YES students. We can’t wait to hear more!
