Alumni And Young Children Standing Outside Gathering Around A Wheel Barrow With Shovels In Their Hands

On Saturday, April 12, YES Alumni Mozambique conducted a Global Youth Service Day School Clean-up project, which alumni named "Pensando Limpinho" -- Portuguese for "Thinking Clean." The project took place at Escola Primaria de Malhazine, a primary school in a suburb of Maputo.

YES alumni Azeite Chaleca, YES 2012-2013; Yuran Pereira, YES 2011-2012; Arsenio Penga, YES 2009-2010; Milicia Modas, YES 2012-2013; and Assane Roque, YES 2010-2011 led a group of approximately 50 participants, including 2014-2015 YES finalists and alternates, 30 6th form students from the school and the program coordinator.

Before the cleaning started, the alumni had a chance to interact with the students and share their experiences, as well as talk to them about the importance of learning English.
The alumni would like to thank Amodefa for providing in-kind donations of transportation and cleaning supplies.

The project was a resounding success! Not only did the school get a new image, but the students and prospective YES participants also had a chance to learn about the importance of keeping their surroundings clean, taking responsibility for their community and the rewards of community service.
