Congratulations to September YES Student of the Month, Hashim Jambi from Saudi Arabia, who has set a high bar for future YES students! Placed in Cedar Rapids, IA through IRIS, this humble young man exemplifies the leadership skills and strong relationships one can develop right from the beginning of the program year.

In the short time he's been in America, Hashim has completed over 50 hours of community service, mostly through his school, George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. He volunteers regularly as a teaching assistant in the Arabic classroom and has been essential to the students' learning. "I help with pronunciation, learning new words and correct spelling. There was even one time that the teacher needed to step out of the classroom, so I got to teach almost the whole class! I really liked leading the activities."

In addition to uncovering a hidden talent for teaching, this year is allowing Hashim a chance to pursue new interests, like running cross country. "We are a pretty athletic family. Even though he's not an avid runner, Hashim has jumped right in, trying everything we do, and has never had a bad attitude about it," said his host mom, Sashi. His racing times have steadily improved over the course of the fall as he’s tackled 5 and 10K races with his host family and their friends. He also accompanied a runner with a disability in one race. He is now training for a half-marathon.

Not surprisingly, this adaptable and hardworking student has formed a close bond with his host family. Hashim’s host mother summed it up: "He is a gem and we feel so lucky to have him. It's just like he's a regular member of the family."

Hashim’s Local Coordinator said that he stood out from the beginning. "Hashim isn't one to seek the spotlight, but he is a natural leader and isn't afraid to do what's right. From day one, I was impressed with his selflessness, maturity, and willingness to try new things. He embodies the essence of the YES Program and continues to be an outstanding representative of Saudi Arabia and IRIS."
