Spreading the Volunteer Spirit

A Man Standing Infront Of A Group Of Students Gesturing Widely

By Amadu G. Kabia, YES 2010-2011, Sierra Leone, hosted by Ayusa in Harper, TX

This year for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), the alumni in Sierra Leone decided to focus our attention on spreading the volunteer spirit to young students. Our main goal was to empower other students so that they would begin taking leadership roles in their communities and more people would celebrate GYSD. To accomplish this, we spent April 20, 2015 spreading the importance of volunteerism to 500 students at Prince of Wales Secondary School in Freetown.

First, Umarr, our YES administrator, introduced the students to iEARN, the YES program, the alumni group and finally, GYSD. Then, we invited the students to join youth around the world in celebrating GYSD by spending time in their communities doing service projects. We encouraged them to learn more about GYSD by visiting Youth Service America’s website, and also invited them to visit the iEARN office in Freetown if they had further questions or comments. Most importantly, we tried to inspire the students to do their first volunteer activity. The session was informative and interactive as students, teachers and principals were able to ask us questions and share their comments.

Before leaving, we also donated one thousand sachets of oral rehydrating solutions (ORS) and sixty bars of soap to the school to help protect the students from the Ebola virus. Both the students and school administration were very appreciative of the donation and excited to start volunteering!
