YES Student is Sitka High School's Student of the Week

Egy Omar Ali Afs Sitka Hs Stu Of The Week Nov 2017

Omar Ali (YES 17-18, Egypt, hosted by AFS in Sitka, AK) was nominated by the Principal's Advisory Council, a group of students who represent all grade levels, to be this week's Student of the Week at Sitka High School (SHS) in Sitka, Alaska. The Student of the Week highlights students who add to the school community, but who sometimes go unrecognized. Omar was cited by students as being an example for others because he is willing to try new activities, even if he isn't sure he will be good at them. Omar was a SHS cross country runner, even though it was a sport he never tried before coming to the U.S. While he didn't become a "star", he reports having enjoyed participating and running with the team at practice and in meets. He also tried wrestling but decided to compete with Drama Debate (DDF) team instead.

Omar's favorite classes are Guitar and Debate/Speech. He appreciates the fact that his fellow students have worked to help him improve his English. Oma's peers appreciate that he has taught them about Egyptian pop music. After one more year of school in Cairo, a city of 9.5 million, Omar plans to attend university. His advice to younger students? "Take a risk. Don't be afraid to meet new people and try new things."  Great advice, Omar!
