A Host Father with a Big Heart

Chicago

By Naji Tarawneh (YES 2018-2019, Jordan, hosted by AFS in San Pedro – LA, California)

Hi, my name is Najy, and I'm from Jordan! I was hosted by AFS in San Pedro – LA, California. I actually started my exchange year a little later than usual in September, because my PO couldn't find a host family for me. I checked my email everyday waiting for news about my placement.

Two weeks before departure, I received an email announcing my placement in LA - but it was with a single dad. My natural parents weren't sure about leaving me for almost a year to live with one person. In the end, I managed to convince my parents with the help of a YES alumnus. When I first met my host dad, Eric, he turned out to be a person with a big heart, and I immediately called my parents to tell them how incredible he is.

I stayed with Eric for almost one year and it was the best. I learned so much, my school was terrific! I like to say that this year was a gift from god. Thanks to the YES program for this great experience!
