Maryame has taken the lessons learned from her exchange year to make a difference in her community.
Last month eighteen alumni participated in the Rotary Medical Convoy, an ongoing collaboration between Rotary District 2451 Egypt, Alliance for Smiles, Inc., the Ministry of Health, and Egypt YES alumni to provide reconstructive surgery for children from underprivileged communities. Alliance for Smiles is a non-profit organization that travels around the world performing free cleft lip and palate surgeries for patients in developing countries.
YES alumni played key roles in translation services for doctors, patients and their families, entertaining and comforting young patients and their parents, registering patients and assisting doctors in clinics and sometimes in surgeries (not medically). One hundred children were examined and more than 70 oral operations were performed. YES alumni also taught the American doctors about Egyptian culture and customs and organized a cultural night consisting of food, music and a presentation on Egypt and the Middle East.
