YES Malaysia alumni recently organized a “Tech Up! Workshop”, in collaboration with iCUBE International.

The two-day workshop focused on serving as a ground zero for participants to gain insights into 21st-century skills, specifically in Python and Computer Science. The guest speaker was Derrick Goh Xin Deik, a research engineer at Huawei Technologies R&D (UK) Ltd. He was formerly a Software Development Engineer intern at Amazon.

The first day started with a brief introduction to Computer Science and then an introductory Python theory session. The next day, Derrick led a hands-on coding session. Equipped with the knowledge that the participants learned on the previous day, they collaborated on several case studies guided by Derrick.

Alumnus Amalin Norman (YES ‘19, placed by AFS-USA in Cincinnati) reflects on her Tech Up! Workshop experience:

“Tech Up! Workshop was what I have been looking for! Coming from a commerce background, this skill would be beneficial for my career. Not only that, Derrick was very engaging, and I received a great start to my Python journey. I believe this 21st-century skills workshop should be done often to provide significant exposure to those seeking any additional soft skills.

On the first day, I was so excited to hear about the Computer Science field.  At first, it was a bit difficult to keep up with plenty of new terms, but with the help of the speaker, I managed to catch up. On the next day, I was able to bring myself up to speed and participate in the session. It felt like writing a new language! And I actually was! It’s always good to know that you’re gaining something!”

I’m glad that I grabbed this opportunity to spend my weekend by joining Tech Up! Workshop. There are zero regrets about fulfilling my leisure time by gaining this golden opportunity. Thanks to the YES Alumni team, specifically Jun Hao Lai, Jonathan Wan, Malini, Lynn Jia, and other volunteers, for making this event into a reality!”
