In July, Tunisian YES alumni Feryel Mhadbi ‘23 and Yosr Manai ‘23 hosted a lively event called “Eco Art: Art a Lot, Waste Not” in Nabeul. The event was a celebration of art and environmental conservation inspired by the importance of promoting a healthy environment.

To start the event, Yosr and Feryel facilitated sessions on the importance of recycling, both on a global and local scale. The discussions were informative and engaging, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and the impact that we can make through teamwork, solidarity, and unity. They presented alumni-led projects focused on composting and recycling and suggested ideas for waste management.

In addition, the alumni examined the types of recycling and traced their origins to ancient civilizations, such as the Roman and Chinese empires. Although recycling is often perceived as a modern concept, this exercise demonstrated that recycling is not a new practice. Yosr and Feryel gave presentations about art made from recycling, giving space for artists to share their work and brainstorm with participants. In this session, participants generated ideas for future workshops that integrate art with the environment and sustainability.

In the afternoon, the tone of the event shifted from educational to creative as the eco-art competition began. Participants transformed waste into stunning works of art, guided by the artists. Each piece was a testament to their commitment to the environment. At the end of the competition, the alumni awarded prizes to the top three art pieces. The sese of accomplishment and joy on the winners’ faces was a highlight of the day.

The event was a powerful reminder of how creativity and conservation can go hand in hand. By engaging with 25 young participants, the alumni fostered their artistic talents and instilled in them an appreciation for protecting our planet.

“As I reflect on this wonderful event, I am reminded of the impact these initiatives can have on our community. It reinforces my passion for environmental conservation and my love for the arts, and it motivates me to continue working towards a time when creativity and sustainability are celebrated in equal measure.” - Feryel Mhadbi ‘23
