Building Bridges of Understanding

Exchange programs strive to foster mutual appreciation between different cultures and communities. YES alumnus Zaid Goussous’ exchange year is an example of how this goal can be achieved. In recognition of Interfaith Harmony Week earlier in February, we are sharing how Zaid built bridges of understanding in his host community.

Zaid spent his exchange year in Indiana, where his aim was to focus on interfaith harmony. As a non-Muslim student who grew up with Muslim peers in Jordan, Zaid knew that it was important for him to clarify any misunderstandings about Islam and portray the religion accurately. So, Zaid held sessions about Islam at local churches and schools to discuss its beliefs and how it identifies with other religious traditions. Not only did the attendees benefit from Zaid’s presentations, but they also shared their new knowledge with others.

Five years after his exchange year, Zaid visited his host community again and he realized the impact of his exchange year. Zaid reunited with his friends who attended his presentations and they shared how valuable those presentations were to them. They also told Zaid that they used his insight on Islam to educate others. This helped Zaid understand the effect that young adults can have in promoting global peace, especially with their digital literacy skills and access to social media platforms. Zaid reflects:

“The YES program is one of the best ways to promote interfaith harmony. The students’ conversations with different members of their host communities can provide the space they need (both as students and later as alumni) to hold local and global initiatives to promote interfaith harmony throughout the world.”
