CineBook Planet Launched in Bheiry, Lebanon

Lebanon

Twenty-five Lebanese YES alumni joined forces Sunday, August 7, 2011, for the opening of a library in the small town of Bheiry, near Zgharta in Northern Lebanon. The library is the first for the community of Bheiry, and it is outfitted with books in Arabic, English, and French. A projector was also donated for film screenings. Leading up to the grand opening, YES alumni collected books from their families, schools, friends, and communities to donate. Together, the alumni were able to collect and donate 217 books, and many more are still on the way.

The library is situated in an unused building owned by a church in Bheiry. Maroutcha Mouawad, a YES alumna from Zgharta who spearheaded the project, worked with the church leadership to convert the unused building into a library. This was a huge endeavor that involved moving church materials and furniture into storage, painting the walls, decorating the space, and building bookshelves. The library project is seen as an ongoing initiative, where YES alumni, AMIDEAST, and community members in Bheiry can work to make the library a true community center.
