Emerging Young Leaders

Basil Almadhoun (YES 2010-2011, Gaza, hosted by Ayusa in Harrisburg, OR)

This year, for the first time, the U.S. Department of State recognized ten outstanding young leaders from around the world in theEmerging Young Leaders Award and Exchange Program. This year, YES alumnus Basel Almadoun was among those selected for the honor.

As an Emerging Young Leader, Basel is visiting the U.S. for three weeks of intensive programing to support his efforts to create positive societal change. The program includes a public ceremony, participation in Global Youth Service Day events, meetings with government officials and NGOs, and travel across the United States to participate in professional meetings. Basel has been working tirelessly to improve Gaza, so this new training will certainly be put to good use.

After returning from the Emerging Young Leaders program, Basel will be eligible for special grants and mentoring to support new projects. Basel’s previous work in Gaza has included increasing volunteerism, debate training, and helping to organize the first ever TEDx event in the area.

We’re excited to see what he comes up with next!
