Food Drive

Cynthia and Rafi sitting on the floor in front of the boxes

By Cynthia Fayssal (YES 2021-2022, Lebanon, placed by IRIS in Sheffield, IA)

After returning from our exchange year, my fellow YES alumnus Rafi Daou ‘22 and I wanted to give back to our community. In the spirit of Christmas giving, we decided on a food drive to help our local community. This felt especially relevant considering the ongoing food and housing crisis in Lebanon.

Throughout December, we collected donations of non-perishable food items like canned goods, grains, rice, and pasta from students in all grade levels at our school. In just four days, we collected over 400 items. On December 22nd, we counted and sorted all the items and distributed them to needy families in our community.

We were so thankful to all those who donated and assisted with the distribution. We were also thankful to our school administration and representatives for being so supportive. It felt amazing to give back to those that need it. Seeing the smile on their faces when they received their box put a smile on ours. Given how successful the food drive was, we are extending the food drive over the coming months to help many more families.
