In May, I joined Bahrain’s Young Parliamentarian Program with the Youth Pioneer Society, a six-month initiative designed to introduce youth to the legal system and prepare them for meaningful engagement in public affairs. The experience was transformative, pushing me out of my comfort zone and equipping me with skills I will carry with me for life.

The program emphasized leadership, communication, and decision-making. Through workshops and simulations, I learned how to communicate effectively, interpret body language, and navigate formal protocols with confidence. One of the most impactful experiences was a mock EU Council session, where we simulated decision-making processes and negotiated policies. It was a challenging yet eye-opening exercise that underscored the complexities of diplomacy and the value of respectful negotiation.

Growing up, I always aspired to be a cultural ambassador for Bahrain. I wanted to represent my country proudly, foster cross-cultural understanding, and create connections beyond borders. My journey toward this goal began with the YES Program, where I spent a year living in Austin, Texas. Immersing myself in a different culture taught me adaptability, open-mindedness, and the importance of collaboration with people from diverse backgrounds.

The skills and lessons I gained during my YES experience proved invaluable as I engaged in the Young Parliamentarian Program. The confidence I developed while navigating a new environment in the U.S. allowed me to contribute meaningfully to discussions, share my perspectives, and embrace opportunities to lead. Both experiences reaffirmed the same lesson: leadership is not just about speaking up—it’s about listening, understanding others, and building bridges.

Reflecting on this journey, I realize how these opportunities have shaped me into a stronger, more confident version of myself. I’m excited to carry forward the lessons I’ve learned to create positive change in my community and beyond. I will forever be grateful to the YES Program for opening doors and helping me grow as a leader and cultural ambassador.
