Green Wave Plantation Project

Planting plants is not something that many people talk about, so you may be wondering why I am saying other people need to be told about it. I, myself, did not know that it was a need until I went to my old school here in Peshawar, Pakistan. When I was interacting with students in one of their science classes, I asked them why our environment needs plants and what plants' global and scientific significance is. Not many students knew the answer and many had no idea how planting is done. That was when I decided to plan a Green Wave Plantation project at Frontier Model School on October 20, 2018.

Students ready to plant!

I, along with my friends Behram Asim (YES 2014-2015, Pakistan, hosted by PAX in Kennewick, WA) and Muhammad Zaib (YES 2014-2015, Pakistan, hosted by AC in Willsboro, NY), got 40-50 plants from a plant nursery nearby. We involved about 30-40 middle school students in the activity and each student got the chance to plant a plant. Before starting we told them why it is an important task and how it is our job to keep the environment clean and oxygenated. Peshawar is a very populated city and because of so many on-road vehicles, many areas are often dusty and the smoke is very visible. This was a chance for us to let students know about the effective usage and conservation of natural resources that have positive effects and will protect our earth from the negative consequences of global warming. Students were also able to help spread knowledge about the importance of planting and the environment.

What made the activity fun was students’ interest in not only knowing how to plant but also their desire to go to their homes and plant there. When we were done planting and had no more space, we still had some plants left so two of the girls took a few plants from us so that they could plant them at their homes. It was a great feeling when we saw students so involved, happy, and asking us to do similar activities in the future as well. Some of the girls who took plants home shared with us and their classmates about how they watered them and the plants grew. Students were able to share what they learned and the day ended in a great way with a group photo.
