Highlight Your Skills

By Safa Tlijani (YES 2017-2018, Tunisia, placed by AYA/AIFS in Stafford, VA)

The YES program has affected my life tremendously and provided me with the opportunity of a lifetime. Therefore, I always try to give back to the community that helped me and support those who don't know the importance of our network. Since returning to Tunisia, I have kept close relations with the alumni network.

One of the ways that I helped my community is by creating a bootcamp for jobseekers to highlight their skills. As a student who is aspiring to my dream career, I have always been fond of acquiring new skills and helping others do so as well. I hoped to leverage my exchange experience to aid jobseekers to learn and practice skills that would help them on their job-hunting journey. I conducted a series of workshops, with the help of other YES alumni and professionals, that taught the audience how to prepare for job hunting. I successfully trained a cohort of 27 participants on how to achieve their dream job.

I conducted four workshops in total. The first focused on how to choose a job and a field of work that would complement your skills. The second workshop taught participants how to write a personalized motivation letter highlighting their skills. In the third workshop, participants learned how important it is to distinguish skills from general job descriptions and find value in their interests. The last workshop focused on preparing for an interview.

Through creating these workshops, I used skills I gained during my YES exchange year to help my community in their personal and professional development.
