HIV Education Initiative for Young Athletes: A Winning Combination

HIV Initiative for Young Athletes

On September 7th, the Zanzibar Youth Empowerment Organization (ZAYEO) kicked off a unique event that combined the power of sports with education. At Regeza Mwendo, 30 young athletes gathered for the "HIV Education Initiative for Young Athletes."

Led by a team of YES alumni, including organizers Abdulkarim Khamis and Nabil Mussa, the event aimed to equip the youth with knowledge about HIV transmission, prevention, and the importance of reducing stigma. Through interactive sessions and a friendly football match, ZAYEO created a fun and engaging learning environment.

Before the match, the athletes participated in an informative HIV awareness session. They learned about how HIV is transmitted, the importance of prevention, and the harmful effects of stigma. The players were eager to learn and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gain this valuable information.

Following the educational session, the two local football teams, previously sponsored by ZAYEO, faced off in a friendly match. The game was not just about winning; it was also about fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and a sense of community. The athletes cheered each other on, celebrated goals, and learned the importance of working together.

In a region where HIV-related stigma is still prevalent, this initiative played a crucial role in empowering the youth. By equipping them with knowledge and breaking down barriers, ZAYEO has made a lasting impact on Unguja Urban West. This event is a testament to the power of combining education and sports to create a positive and impactful experience for young people.
