Joining Together for Global Youth Service Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Two YES alumni crouching on a hill, cleaning and harvesting raspberry bushes

By Lamija Jamak (YES 2013-2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted by PAX in Marysville, Washington)

As a part of this year’s Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), which was celebrated from April 20-22, three YES Abroad students and two YES alumni volunteered at Forest Park Mojmilo, located a 15-minute walk from the center of Sarajevo. This protected natural corridor, which covers ten hectares, has about 1,000 saplings representing over 100 varieties of native and other specific types of plants. Amela Nevaljalovic (YES ’17), Alumni Coordinator Lamija Jamak (YES ’14) and YES Abroad students 2017-2018: Haley, Josie and Greg helped with cleaning and hilling raspberries.

Meanwhile, Pavle Lakic (YES ’12) organized a different GYSD project in the city of Tuzla. On April 21, Pavle and other volunteers combined a trash collecting activity with hiking, and they restored road signs for other hikers. With help from another alumnus, Mirsad (YES ’17), Pavle organized a hike from Stupari to Javorje in cooperation with Omladinski resursni centar Tuzla (ORC Tuzla). Other local hikers joined in on the project and helped clean up the forest.
