Just Do It

Faizabball

By Faiza Karim (YES 2018-2019, Pakistan, hosted by CCI in Hallowell, ME)

I didn’t expect that during my exchange year, as a Junior at Hall-Dale High School, I’d be doing three different and completely new sports, making some amazing friends who care about me and, living with a host-family who gives me a place to call “home” while far away from my home in Pakistan.

Playing a new sport in a completely new environment seems challenging, but it is worth it. One of the ways that I have experienced American culture is through sports. In the fall, my host mom suggested I play soccer. I joined a soccer team and made great friends that are like my family now. In the winter season, I decided to do basketball. It was such an awesome experience to do basketball with new people and make some new friends.

I did not just learn how to play a certain sport but I also learned not to give up, how important teamwork is, and to never stop trying. Spring season has just begun and I am playing tennis. Tennis is a fun sport and I enjoy playing tennis.

In addition to playing sports, I am a part of Key Club, Social Change Club, and Environmental Club in my school. I also got Summa Cum Laude in my first semester, which is the highest Honor Roll in my school.

Key Club has taught me about the importance of community service. Being in Key Club I have participated in my community a lot by volunteering at different places. In Social Club, we do projects that benefit our community. Our first project was called "I am More" through which we tried to spread peace and love around our school. We have just started Environmental Club and I'm excited to work with new people and learn more. These clubs have also taught me about synergy and leadership skills.

The best thing about doing sports in high school when you are an exchange student is that it keeps you from missing your family and friends back home. I am so glad that I tried to do something new and different. It requires courage and a lot of hard work, but I am grateful for all the friends I have made here and for all the support I get from my host family and friends. Thank you YES for giving me this life-changing opportunity.
