Legal Literacy and Advisory Session

Rihab Al Bawab 15 And Hiba Al Sheyab 15 At Legal Literacy Session

On March 11, Amideast/Jordan held a professional development session for two YES alumnae, Rihab AlBawab and Hiba Al-Sheyab, to learn more about Jordanian law and commemorate International Women's Day - which was held on March 8. The purpose of the session was to provide Jordanian YES alumnae with the resources needed to become more aware of their rights as women under Jordanian law.

Two legal professionals, Zaina Naser and Ban Takhayleh, led the session and covered general information about the Jordanian legal system. The two professionals also clarified common misconceptions about Jordanian law that give Jordanian citizens the false impression that the legal system does not support Jordanian females. After covering those topics, the alumnae asked for advice about what to consider when signing contracts and documents and what to do in the event of assault.

After the session ended, the alumnae both felt that it was an eye-opening event. Rihab says, “Attending the legal literacy session was a very informative experience! I learned a lot more about Jordanian legal system and its more specific laws and regulations that support women. I realized that I didn’t know much about how laws in Jordan work and that I had huge misconceptions. This session highlighted basic information that every Jordanian citizen should understand. I know that this session only lasted for a couple of hours, but I really feel that it gave me better knowledge about Jordan’s laws and how they protect their citizens.”

This event helped empower these two YES alumnae to understand how their nation's legal system supports their rights as women and ability to protect themselves through the law.
