March YES Student of the Month

Luna Banner

We are pleased to announce the March YES Student of the Month, Luna Atallah (YES 2018 - 2019, Lebanon, hosted by AFS in Casco, ME)!

Luna Preschool

Since her arrival in Casco, Luna has completed 160 hours of community service at the local community library, the school library, a preschool, an assisted living center, a food pantry, and the community theatre, among other venues.

Luna has been a shining star in her Lake Region High School community. In addition to her exemplary academic performance, she is a member of Indoor Track and Field and the Interact Club, which has afforded her many community service opportunities. In April, she will perform in the school musical, West Side Story.  Luna has also started a Lebanese Food and Culture Club at school. Additionally, she is a member of the Suicide Awareness Club and plans to start a Suicide Awareness Club back home in Lebanon upon her return. Luna said she is inspired to “leave this world better than the way I found it.”

Luna Assisted Living Center

Beyond volunteering, Luna participates in local community life in many other ways. At Casco Village Church, she sings with the choir every week, and participates in jazz and ballet dancing. She performed in the church’s Christmas dance recital and looks forward to dancing in the upcoming spring recital in May.

Luna noted that she had learned a lot from volunteering. She said, “This experience isn't only important for sharing your culture but also for taking the best out of America's culture. We are the youth, and if there's hope in a better future, we should be the ones who initiate progress.”

Congratulations, Luna!
