Me and My Soccer Team

Whole Soccer Team

Faiza Karim (YES 2018-19, Pakistan, hosted by CCI in Richmond, ME)

Being an exchange student is like living a dream, you make new friends, meet new people, live with a family, join a new school, play new sports, live in a place where you know no one, and make friends from different countries of the world. It's an experience that I call a dream. It's been a month since I got here. Everything seems familiar now. I joined my school's soccer team from the very first day of my school. I play in the games. I joined soccer because I wanted to try new things, things that I've never done before. Although it is a bit hard for me, I still play. I really enjoy being on the team, practicing together, going to different schools for the games, and having team dinners.

I never knew how it feels like to be on a team until I joined and I played. I work really hard. All the girls on the team support me a lot. My coaches are really nice too. It's started to feel like home, like I've been living here for my whole life. My team is like a family to me. I never knew soccer would give me a new family. I wanted to write about my soccer experience because I want people to know how it changed my perspective about sports and American high schools. I feel so grateful to meet all these people and to be a part of the YES community. I am very thankful to YES Program for giving me and hundreds of other students this life-changing opportunity. I shared my culture with my team and coaches by telling them about my country and gave them some gifts from Pakistani culture. Thank you YES!
