The YES program proudly announces Ardian Berisha of Kosovo, as the YES October Student of the Month! Ardian was placed by IRIS in Hampton, Iowa, where he attends Hampton-Dumont High School.

Ardian hit the ground running in Iowa, always keeping a positive attitude and ready to embrace new experiences through the YES program. He joined his school’s cross-country team, where he posted a personal best at a recent race, along with the Debate Club and Intercultural Club. He volunteers at youth soccer and school events, and works at the concession stand. He’s already completed 20 hours of volunteer service and plans to reach 100 hours by the end of the school year. Ardian is taking AP Calculus and other high-level courses, but says American History is his favorite, because the class helps him understand American culture more deeply.

Ardian takes his responsibility as a student diplomat seriously. He was invited to attend an event at the Kosovo Consulate in Des Moines, hosted by the new Chief of Mission. At the event, Ardian spoke about his exchange experience in Iowa and received a special recognition: the State of Iowa Secretary of State Seal. Ardian is proud to represent his country and eager to build more ties between the State of Iowa and Kosovo.

Ardian values quality time spent with his host family. He and his host brother Issac, who recently returned from studying in Malaysia on the YES abroad program, have become very close. They attended the homecoming dance together and participated in activities such as the Ball Run event, where students in the school district run from the local schools to the high school.

His host family is most proud of his flexibility in adapting to a rural lifestyle and his determination to always do his best. According to his host mother, Ardian has fit into their family from the start. He is good natured and has an amazing sense of humor. Ardian has already made a difference in his community through his volunteer work and willingness to jump in and help.

Congratulations Ardian!
