Celebrating Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day

Aengela places flags at Forest Lawn Cemetary.

By Aengela Wynonah Brosula, YES 2014-2015, Qatar

In celebration of Veteran’s Day, my host mother brought me to the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY. It was my first time visiting, and my first time celebrating U.S. troops who fought for their country. The moment we entered the cemetery, I was surprised by the amount of people putting flags in front of the graves of veterans. I started placing flags as well, and it amazed me how these people showed their appreciation towards those who sacrificed their lives.

After the placing of the flags, there was a short assembly to commemorate all veterans. As I stood there observing the assembly, I learned how people valued the lives of others. Kids, scouts, ROTC students and citizens of Buffalo, NY showed their patriotic side that day. I was also fascinated by the many wars in which veterans had died; World Wars I & II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. The cemetery itself is very historical, and even the graves of those who died on the Titanic in 1912 are there. This was indeed a very memorable experience.
