Pancakes and Football

Shahrahzad Meerza Nh12 Kuwait Mi At And Hostsis Mina Yu Fundraiser

My name is Shahrazad, I'm a YES student from Kuwait, my host community is in Michigan. My host family consists of both host parents, a host sister and host brother in college, and another host sister who is my age! I've had a few experiences so far, but this one was probably the best!

One Saturday, I decided to have pancakes for breakfast, I thought I should try to make them myself. I got out the pancake mix, added water and started stirring. I then noticed that the mix was too dry, so I asked my host sister, Mina, she added more water, but it was still dry. Mina felt something on her slippers, and when she looked down, the liquid for the mix was all over her slippers, it turned out that I used the rice colander! I cleaned up the kitchen and started a new mix, I flipped the pancakes with all my power and they turned out delicious!

Later that afternoon, there was a football game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State. A VERY important game because they're big rivals. My placement organization asked for 5 volunteers, exchange students or host siblings, to raise money by facilitating parking for cars. My host sister and I volunteered with 2 more students and another host sibling. Mina and I were supporting Michigan State, while the other students were supporting The University of Michigan. We made a sign and Mina and I stood at the end of the road holding it up.

A lot of cars drove by but only 3 parked in our lot. Mina and I were starting to feel very cold, so we started to move around in one place to stay a little warm. As the cars drove by, they didn’t pay attention to the sign. Mina and I decided to "advertise" a little by pointing at the sign and jumping around and saying "Park Here!" And by almost 45 minutes, we had about 7 cars parked in our lot. We kept on doing that and by the end, our lot was full!

It was such a great experience, because I had the chance to see how the atmosphere is like during football games, the amazing weather and we raised a lot of money.                   My first impression on life in the United States is indescribable! I'm having such an amazing time, enjoying every moment and I couldn’t ask for a better host family. My school principal has also been very helpful. My host family is absolutely amazing, they're very understanding and supportive, I don’t feel far away from home. Thank you to the YES Program for a great opportunity and experience so far!
