Running Past My Limits

Aleezay with her cross country team

By: Aleezay Khan (YES 2024-2025, Pakistan, placed by AYUSA in Madison, WI)

I still remember the day my dad told me about the YES program. I listened with full interest, my heart racing with excitement. The possibility of studying in the United States, immersing myself in a new culture, and making lifelong friends seemed like a dream come true.
When applications opened, I didn't hesitate. A few months later, I rushed home from school, eager to check the mail. That's when I saw it – my finalist letter. My parents beamed with pride. I know this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Fast-forward to today, and I am living proof that the YES program changes lives. As I stood on the cross-country running track, ready to tackle 5K, I recall the girl who once cycled on her rooftop due to safety and cultural restrictions in my city. My parents were concerned about my safety, so outdoor activities were not quite possible. Yet, I craved adventure. YES taught me that nothing is impossible. YES taught me that nothing is impossible.

During my YES exchange year, I have discovered a new world where I could run, play sports, and pursue their passions without fear. Cross-country running, in particular, challenged me. I had never run 5K before, but the YES program encouraged me to push beyond my comfort zone. With each step, I silenced the doubts in my mind. "You're a girl; you can't do this." "You're not built for running." But I proved myself wrong. As I crossed the finish line, setting a new personal record, tears of joy streamed down my face. This wasn't just about running; it was about breaking of my comfort zone. It was about embracing challenges and discovering my inner strength.

The YES program gave me more than an educational experience. It gave me a voice, confidence, and a newfound sense of purpose. To the YES program, I say thank you. Thank you for believing in me, for providing opportunities that transcended borders and cultures. Thank you for teaching me that nothing is impossible. As I look back, I realize that the YES program isn't just a scholarship; it is a lifeline. It connected me with like-minded individuals, lifelong friendships, and ignited a fire within me. possible. Today, I stand tall, proud of the person I've become. The YES program didn't just change my life; it empowered me to change the lives of others.
