By Amadu Kabia (YES 2010-2011, Sierra Leone, hosted by AYUSA in Harper, TX)

Amadu G. Kabia (YES' 11) and Joseph J. Kebbie (YES 2015-2016, hosted by ACES in Oregon, OH) represented the Sierra Leone YES Alumni Association at the the SDG2030 Summit for West Africa which took place in Ghana in December 2017. During the SDG2030 summit, Amadu and Joseph learned about the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. They believe that YES alumni volunteering in community service projects will find the 17 goals a useful reference tool for brainstorming project ideas. Community service projects carried out at the grassroots level will help the UN achieve its goals by 2030.

Amadu Kabia and Joseph Kebbie organized a daylong workshop which was attended by 21 Sierra Leone YES alumni. These alumni either lived in Freetown or came from other provinces in Sierra Leone. The workshop took place at iEARN's Sierra Leone office, located in Freetown on January 27, 2018. Amadu and Joseph taught the workshop attendees about the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and project writing skills. They discussed topics such as budgeting, partnership, project pitching, social media campaigns, and team building. Amadu and Joseph utilized flip charts and a projector to help the workshop attendees visualize the SDGs and other important lessons.

At the end of the workshop, Augustine Margao (YES’17) said, “The workshop was very interactive and I’m happy to learn about all 17 SGDs. These goals will definitely guide me when I brainstorm project ideas. I’m also very excited to learn about the tools used in project writing.”
