Nigerian YES Alumni at The Gboko Youth Summit

YES Alumni Ana Akaangee (YES '16), Philomena Erdoo Iorkyaan (YES '15), and Teryima Manta (YES '13) hosted The Gboko Youth Summit which was held from August 10, 2024 to August 12, 2024 in Benue State, Nigeria. The event brought together young people, community leaders, and civil society to explore how digital innovation could drive local efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ana Akaangee (YES '16) organized the event in collaboration with the Aidwell Foundation, an organization that actively promotes equality, social justice, and human rights for all. The summit celebrated International Youth Day, emphasizing that youth are key to creating a sustainable future. For three days, both online and in-person sessions delved into the transformative power of digital tools in promoting small businesses and raising awareness on climate change. The discussions highlighted how technology can fuel economic growth and support local SDG initiatives. The online workshops set the stage for the final day’s in-person gathering at Winnika Hotel, where participants prepared for interactive sessions and cultural performances.

A keynote address by Dr. Shedrack Akpem, a Nelson Mandela Fellow, inspired the youth to align their actions with the SDGs, emphasizing that meaningful change begins with local efforts. A panel discussion featuring leaders like Mary Andiir from Aidwell Foundation and Tersoo Abur, the Gboko Branch Chairman of Persons with Disabilities, underscored the importance of collaboration between government, civil society, and youth in achieving community goals.

Ana Akaangee (YES '16) understood the importance of inclusivity and ensured that the event was accessible to all. Special arrangements were made to accommodate individuals with disabilities, and every participant received conference materials to make the experience seamless. Ana’s dedication to the project, along with the support of her fellow alumni, Philomena Erdoo Iorkyaan (YES '15) and Teryima Manta (YES '13), showcased the power of youth leadership and the potential of alumni networks to create lasting change.
