By: Lea Abdel Khalek (YES 2021-2022, Lebanon, placed by AFS-USA in Carroll, OH)
YES alumni in Lebanon recently held a career exploration workshop called “Together for a Brighter Future” at the Baakleen National Library. The event prepared high school students for their future careers, and addressed the uncertainties that Lebanese high schoolers face as they transition to higher education and the workplace.
One key component of the workshop was helping students select their university majors. The YES alumni emphasized the importance of aligning your interests and strengths with your field of study. They also discussed how to research fields of study, understand the career paths they offer, and consider long-term goals and job market trends.
The workshop also addressed the challenges of succeeding in higher education and how to transition from high school to university. The alumni shared valuable tips on how to navigate this shift successfully. They discussed time management skills, study strategies, and the importance of seeking help when needed. The alumni also highlighted the significance of getting involved in campus activities, building a support network, and taking advantage of campus resources such as tutoring centers, clubs, and career services. This practical advice aimed to help students thrive during their university studies.
One of the most impactful aspects of the workshop was its interactive nature. Students were able to ask questions and engage in discussions with the YES alumni. The Q&A sessions covered a wide range of topics, from details about certain majors to personal anecdotes about overcoming challenges. The alumni provided honest and insightful answers, and students gained a better understanding of the resources available to them.
The ‘Together for a Brighter Future’ workshop had a profound impact on its attendees. For many students, it was an experience that provided clarity and direction for their future careers. The practical advice and personal stories shared by the YES alumni resonated deeply with the students, helping them realize that they are not alone in their journey. Students left the workshop feeling more confident and prepared to handle the challenges ahead.
