In August 2015, the U.S. Embassy invited the YES Alumni Association in Sierra Leone to help them collaborate on their new initiative, the Girls Going Strong project. This project seeks to support poor girls who reside in the slums of Freetown and are in danger of dropping out of school or becoming teen mothers. Alumni spent August going to the Kroo Bay and Old Wharf Communities and identifying girls who could benefit from this project. They also took a survey to identify what school supplies the girls would most need.

In total, 140 girls from the two communities were selected to take part in the project, and on November 13, 2015, the girls attended a career development workshop conducted by the Embassy and the alumni. Over ninety people attended the event at the National Youth Ministry Conference Hall, including YES alumni, representatives from the Public Affairs section at the U.S. Embassy, police officers from the family support unit, and seventy of the girls involved in the project. The workshop featured three successful Sierra Leonean women as guest speakers. Each of the women shared her experiences and guided the seventy vulnerable girls with advice about career choice and personal development. The workshop also discussed methods of preventing teenage pregnancy and encouraged the girls to continue their education rather than get married early. At the end of the workshop, the seventy girls were excited to receive school supplies and school tuition for one year. The Kroo Bay Community Chief shared his sincere appreciation to the YES alumni and U.S. Embasssy in a very moving speech.
