YES Alumni in Aden fundraise for community service!
On April 4, the alumni held a bake sale to raise funds for cleaning, repairing and painting an old public park in the city of Aden. Many traditional Yemeni foods and international dishes were prepared, and there were several volunteers present – from AMIDEAST staff to neighborhood residents – who participated to help make this event a success. 2014-15 YES nominees also volunteered, and had the opportunity to see the importance of fundraising for community service activities with the YES alumni association in Aden.
Participants were able to raise enough funds to organize the renovation of public parks in the Mansoura district, in celebration of Global Youth Service Day. Renovations included repairing and painting broken park benches, along with landscaping and tree trimming. Most of the public places in Aden have been neglected, and very little work has been done by the municipality offices. This activity raised awareness about the importance of community involvement for the benefit of all city residents and community members.
