December YES Student of the Month

The YES program is proud to announce Lintang Aristianto of Indonesia as the YES Student of the Month. Lintang is placed in Alvin, Texas, where she attends Alvin High School.

Lintang, or “Lynn” as her host community fondly refers to her, attended her first day of school less than 24 hours after landing in her new Texas community. Her host dad was impressed with Lynn’s “indomitable spirit” on her first day in the United States. Her host family enjoys watching her confidence grow and is grateful for her eagerness to try new things and share her culture. Lynn has made traditional meals such as Gulai and Beef Rendang for her host family, and shared love of food became an effortless way to bond with her new family. She also enjoys sharing other cultural traditions such as Bali’s “Day of Silence,” Wayang puppetry, Gamelan orchestras, and Indonesia’s traditional kite festival. Lynn took her love of sharing to school during International Education Week (IEW) by sharing the traditional Wayang puppet, traditional clothing, and treats. Her IEW presentations were well received, with students actively asking questions and engaged in the process. Lynn reflected on IEW, saying, “It was a heartwarming experience to share about the history, traditions, and culture that shaped my identity today."

Lynn is enthusiastic about her studies and school activities. Her favorite class is AP English Language and Composition III, where she is building her essay-writing skills. Her teachers can see this enthusiasm shine through. Her history teacher stated, “Every time I look at Lynn, she is smiling a smile that comes from her heart.” Lynn fills her remaining time with extracurricular experiences. She is involved in Student Council, Interact Rotary Club, University Interscholastic League, where she hopes to compete in editorial writing, the Theater Club’s costume and set building teams, and the Technology Student Association, in which she was elected by her peers to serve as Secretary. She is always trying new things and achieving success along the way.

Lynn has a passion for volunteering, taking any opportunity that is presented to her. This has led to an impressive variety of volunteer experiences and a tremendous 59 hours of community service already amassed. After organizing a project at her school in which she distributed packages of homemade cookies to staff and teachers, she said, “I hoped to show them our appreciation for their effort in creating a better learning environment for student.”

Congrats to Lintang “Lynn” Aristianto, our YES December Student of the Month!
