February Student of the Month

Mohd At Civ Ed

We are happy to announce the February 2020 YES Student of the Month, Mohd Shadab, from India!  Mohd is placed by CIEE and hosted by the Shorey family in Belmont, ME, where he attends Belfast Area High School.

Having completed over 180 hours of community service, Mohd has already made a large impact on his host community. He regularly volunteers at a local public library and a local animal shelter and is currently working with his friends on a project for students with special needs. Mohd says, “I enjoyed my work whatever I do as a community service because this is really helping me to build up my leadership skills and quality for being a good global citizen.” As an enthusiastic youth ambassador, Mohd gave more than 25 presentations during International Education Week (IEW) to a combined audience of over 500 people. Although Mohd was initially nervous about public speaking, he said that giving these presentations helped him build his self-confidence.

He radiates this same enthusiasm in his American high school. His teachers describe him as a vibrant member of the school community who is always willing to participate and to share his experiences and culture. He has joined many school activities, including Debate Club, Peer Leadership Club, and Science Olympiad. A straight A student, Mohd is doing so well in his classes that other students seek him out during study hall for help with math and science.

Recently, Mohd was selected as a social media specialist for the February YES Civic Education Workshop in Washington, DC, during which 100 YES students learned about the U.S. system of government, non-governmental organizations, and leadership skills. His future goal is to “become a good global leader and remove poverty and social conflicts from the society.” He also had the exciting opportunity to spend a day at the Maine State House in Augusta, working alongside State Senator Erin Herbig and learning about state government.

Mohd has a great relationship with his host family, teachers, and other community members. As a member of the Shorey family, Mohd has especially enjoyed spending time with his four host sisters. Mohd says, “In just a couple months it is feeling like I am living with them for many years. I just love and enjoy each and every moment of my exchange year.”

Congratulations, Mohd!
