Alumni addressed global challenges through SDG projects, mentorship, and community-driven initiatives.
In the mountain village of Abadiyeh, there is a beautiful mountain located near villagers’ homes which experiences brush fires every summer causing damage to the area and danger to people's lives. In July 2nd, 2011, YES alumni took it upon themselves to prevent brushfires by taking care of trees and cleaning the area before the summer heat occurs.
With help from AMIDEAST Lebanon, YES alumni applied for and received a mini-grant for the community service project. Twenty-five YES alumni in the region met with an Abadiyeh NGO president to coordinate their efforts. The NGO provided tools and resources and everyone pitched in to remove dead shrubbery from trees, planted 9 new pine trees, and took other critical preventative measures.
The project not only help protect the landscape from brushfires, it also served to raise brusfire awarness for nearby communities.
