A New Computer Lab and Library for Young Students in Yemen

Compu

Alumni in Yemen stand in front of a newly installed library at a primary school in Fuqom Village.

Due to the success of two alumni activities that took place in February, alumni from Yemen were able to support two initatives at an underserved primary school in Fuqom Village, located near Aden.

The first iniative was the establishment of a computer lab at the school. Funds raised from a bake sale went to the refurbishing of 12 computers that had been donated by an interantional organization three years ago. The computers sat and went unused for a long time, but then the alumni installed updated software and hardware, and the computer lab was open to the students!

The second iniative was the addition of a library to the computer lab. The success of a February book drive led to the collection of about one thousand books! In March, a cabinet was built and installed in the lab, which will house the books and help spread literacy and encoruage reading, while students also develope computer skills.

Maintaining the school computers was one aspect of success, while establishing the library was another success! But the anticipation and smiles seen on the faces of students at the school, along wtith the warm welcome of YES alumni, made the event an overall success! The alumni look forward to learning about the impacts of their labor as the computers and books are utilized.
