Volunteering at the Fire Department

Jonila Fire Truck

Jonila With Firemen

Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the local fire station by helping the firemen disinfect their fire trucks, door handles, offices, and other things that people come in contact with, so that they can have a cleaner and safer environment considering the circumstances of COVID-19. When I was done helping them clean, they offered me a tour of the fire station. This was very exciting for me because I've never been to a fire department before. They even let me try on the firefighter uniform while they explained to me the duties that firemen have. I got to see all the equipment they use and went inside the fire truck.

Being at the fire station was such an interesting and fun experience, and I loved every second of it. This was all new to me, and I now have so much respect for firemen because I can only imagine how hard it is to save lives in those heavy uniforms! I was able to meet the Chief and the other workers of the Fire Department, I learned that they work there voluntarily. I'm glad to know that there are people out there who volunteer to wake up in the middle of the night to make sure we are all safe. This was my first time being at a Fire Department, and it was definitely a successful learning observation. I'm glad that I could help them out at least by a little bit by cleaning.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized that this and so many other learning opportunities that I’ve had were all possible because of the YES Program. Life is all about trying new things, meeting new people, and going on adventures, and I'm so grateful that YES gave me the opportunity to do all of those in one year. I’ve met people and made friendships I know I'll never forget, seen so many different beautiful places, and learned all about the American culture. I can't imagine what my life would be like right now if I wasn't here. Although it's been hard recently with the COVID-19 pandemic, I've been trying to enjoy what little time I have left here, and I always remind myself that I'm so lucky to be here in the first place. This has truly been the most memorable year of my life.
